Constraints in subtitling tends to choose professional Subtitling Video agency

Essentially, subtitles and closed captions are almost identical, but they are designed for two different purposes.

Subtitling is a form of audiovisual translation or it’s called video Translation Subtitles They are the text derived from the screenplay of the dialog or commentary in films, video games, television programs, etc. It also helps in understanding the movies from any part of the world.

Essentially, subtitles and closed captions are almost identical, but they are designed for two different purposes. Subtitling services assume an audience can hear the audio, but they also need the dialogue provided in translated text form as well for better understanding the language. On the other hand, closed captions assume an audience cannot hear the audio and they need a text description, as what is happening on the screen.

Subtitles on short films, videos, etc., helps different kinds of audiences to watch and enjoy foreign language video productions. Thereby, subtitling for video can benefit the viewers in understanding the foreign language dialogue in their own native language.

While subtitles facilitate understanding, the work that goes behind the production of subtitles is long, precise and has its own specifications, rules, criteria and limitations. Therefore, in the making of subtitles, the translator must consider several aspects like positioning, timing, the limits often characters per-line and the reading speed.

While, doing a subtitling a video work, constraints are forever present and some of that includes:

  1. Space allotment - Translated subtitles is limited to only two lines. It is generally, positioned in the center of the screen.

  2. Involving characters - Each line is limited to a maximum of 70 characters in a video frame including the symbols and spaces.

  3. Time limit - Subtitle time duration seen on the screen should range from minimum to maximum of one second to six seconds. Subtitling duration has a direct relationship with the reading speed of the viewer. Thus, the actual number of characters in the subtitles and its duration remaining on screen will depend on the average reading speed of the viewer.

  4. Reading speed of the viewer - As people do not have the same speed when reading the same number of texts that appears for maximum of 6 seconds. It is estimated that reading three words per second is the average reading speed of the viewer. Therefore, taking this into account, it is said that the average viewer needs about four seconds to read lines of subtitling that contains 70 characters.

  5. Spotting - This is a technical aspect, here the translator must calculate the time in which the subtitle should appear and disappear on the screen.

  6. Change of camera shot - When there is a change of camera shot, readers re-read the subtitles. This affects the duration of the subtitles too.

From all the above aspects that discussed, it is considered that subtitling is an art and creating subtitles is not an easy task. Therefore, to generate subtitles for your video, it is important to have a professional translator behind you. They have experience and skill to keep the meaning and context of the original material within the subtitles they add.
