Automatic Pool Cleaner Repair - How to Troubleshoot a Problem at Home

Automatic cleaners are a wonderful addition to any pool, but like anything in a home or business, they need regular maintenance to keep them running smoothly and efficiently.

Automatic cleaners are a wonderful addition to any pool, but like anything in a home or business, they need regular maintenance to keep them running smoothly and efficiently. Small malfunctions do not need to cause a costly replacement, and there are many fixes that you, or your client, can make at home.

The first step to troubleshoot a problem with a robotic or pressure-side pool cleaner is to check to make sure there is not water in the handle of the unit. This can disrupt normal operation and should be cleared by simply removing the unit from the water, placing it on a flat surface, moving the handle back and forth and listening for sloshing sounds. If the problem persists, the handle may be cracked and needs to be replaced.

For robotic and suction side cleaners, the next thing to check is that all hoses are firmly connected. If you find air bubbles in the return line, this indicates a leak or loose connection and can be fixed by using O-rings to patch holes and tighten connections.

Robotic cleaners can also be tangled up on the bottom of the pool or in the corner of a narrow area, and this is usually easy to fix. Keeping the hoses in good condition will prevent them from becoming damaged and help them reach all areas of the pool.

If the cleaner is not climbing the walls as it should be, there may be a problem with the cleaning pattern or cleaner speed. Readjusting the pattern or adjusting the cleaner speed will allow it to gain traction and climb the wall more easily.

For pressure side cleaners, a problem with the power train or booster pump can lead to a stalled machine. This can be resolved by ensuring that the booster pump and inline strainers are clean, examining the WMS orifices for debris, and confirming that the backup valves are working properly (if equipped).

For suction side cleaners, check to make sure the filter is clean and that the skimmer basket is empty. This will allow the machine to perform at optimal levels. Additionally, a clean vacuum port will prevent the cleaner from getting stuck on raised floor fittings. You can also reduce the cleaner speed to avoid jamming on convex and concave surfaces.

While the time it takes to check a cleaner can seem like an investment, it will pay off in the long run by saving the cost of a replacement and avoiding unnecessary replacements. Most importantly, a little forethought and care will grant an automatic pool cleaner an extended lifespan and more efficient cleaning. So instead of throwing away a perfectly good unit, let your clients know that with just a few simple steps, they can make their own repairs and extend the life of their cleaners well beyond its expected warranty period.
